I am new to this group and want to get started, but my immediate interest is in working with a couple trees that are outside in the ground (Pinion Pines). I believe this is actually called Niwaki. Is this the best forum?
I would like a recommendation for a good beginner book or books that cover Bonsai, but also addresses Niwaki.
Thank you!
The DeGroot book is excellent as well.
Artistic Foundations of Bonsai Design by Andy Rutledge.
I have Jake Hobson's "Niwaki". I think I bought it on Amazon a few years ago. The photos are lovely, and the drawings and instructions are very helpful. It doesn't have any of our western native species, but you might be able to apply what you have learned on your pinyons.
Principles of Bonsai Design by David DeGroot is an excellent book that covers a wide range of bonsai styling as well as horticultural elements. Would recommend for any bonsai enthusiast.
It gives examples of in ground trees that could possibly be considered niwaki though I am unfamiliar with the term.
You could no doubt apply the tree styles and rules of visual balance on a larger scale in relation to your in-ground trees.
I was able to acquire a hardcover copy on the internet for $32.
I’m new too and I haven’t come across niwaki in my books yet, but I still have a lot to read.
American Bonsai Society has some good books. Maybe one of theirs covers niwaki.
