Sam Tan is a San Francisco Bay-based bonsai artist who represents the next generation of bonsai in the U.S, blending classical and Neo-American styles.
Sam specializes in design of collected material and his favorite species to work with is pygmy cypress (Cupressus Pygmaea). He enjoys the creative process of working with slender, elongated forms of collected pygmy cypresses, which also bear many similarities to collected Rocky Mountain Junipers prevalent throughout Colorado.
Sam has studied with Ryan Neil at Bonsai Mirai, Michael Hagedorn at Crataegus Bonsai, and Jonas Dupuis. Sam has displayed trees at club and regional shows including the 2022 and 2024 Pacific Bonsai Expo.
