About the event

This presentation will explore how to successfully grow bonsai in Colorado and offer a fresh perspective on fundamental techniques. Darrell will review scientific literature on soils and cation exchange capacity for container gardening, shedding light on the science and math behind soil mixes and root growth. He will also examine conflicting recommendations from renowned bonsai artists in the U.S. and Europe, testing these ideas through the lens of science.

In addition, Darrell will discuss the importance of taking a long-term view of bonsai cultivation, especially when overwintering trees in Colorado's unpredictable climate. Understanding the impact of 10-year and even 100-year weather events has significantly influenced his own approach to bonsai care. Finally, the talk will highlight the importance of tailoring techniques to specific species, as not all bonsai trees respond the same way to care and environmental conditions.

This session is perfect for bonsai enthusiasts looking to deepen…
