Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society is pleased to offer a 3-part education program for RMBS
members in good standing who are new to bonsai and interested in acquiring basic knowledge
and skills necessary for developing healthy and attractive bonsai. The fee for the entire series
of three classes is $70. As a benefit to members, this tuition is discounted 20% off the actual
cost of the classes.
Tuition includes the cost of a pre-bonsai Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) with good styling
potential, nine hours of instruction by experienced RMBS members, a pair of bonsai scissors,
and a copy of Bonsai: 101 Essential Tips by Harry Tomlinson. Other tools, wire, and soil will be
provided by the volunteer instructors; please bring your own tools and wire if you have them.
Among the topics covered in this beginner course are: the history of bonsai, traditional and non-
traditional styles, how to identify suitable plant material, using basic bonsai tools, methods of
styling, care of bonsai, displaying our trees, treatments for diseases and pests, and much more.
The first portion of each class will consist of a lecture-discussion, and the second portion will be
devoted to small-group and individual guidance on styling your tree.
The maximum enrollment in the course is 8 people. The registration period will open at 8:00
AM on Wednesday, May 1 and close at 5:00 PM on Friday, May 10, or when the maximum
enrollment is reached, whichever is earlier.
Please note: Portulacaria are tropical trees and therefore can be grown indoors or outdoors (in
warm weather). They don’t require a location for winter dormancy, making them ideal trees for
bonsai enthusiasts in apartments and condos!
