Actually, looking at the Mirai site, seems like 1/4 is a good bet for pines. Seeing that we're in a dryer climate, maybe 1/16 is not the worst idea, but I think I'll go with 1/4.

@dlmcpeters Thanks for the advice here! I was able to look at a couple forums and it seems like blue light inhibits growth (at least from what I can tell). It is odd because some of my tropicals seem to like the lights I use, like bougainvillea and rain tree, while others do not seem too keen on them, like sageretia. Maybe I should try Mike's lights?

Looks like a great option, and cheaper than the lights I have been using. I bought two Exlenvce LDE fixtures. The price has gone up a lot since I purchased them. They seem to work decently, a fair amount of flowers on my bougainvillea (I know they are not really followers but modified leaves 😆), lavender star, and carmona, but the growth is not nearly as strong as being outdoors. Maybe I should give the ones you are using a try. Out of curiosity, lots of these LEDs have a veg and flower setting. You can use them together, or alone. Thanks for your help here! Yep, this is a Japanese Black Pine. I’ll let the tree grow strong for the next few years. In terms of candle cutting, should I leave those too, or cut them to increase the branch structure?

Thank you all for the great insights here! I really appreciate it. In terms of timing, when do you all make the shift to heeling in your trees or moving them to a sheltered space? Do you wait for temps to drop to a consistent low (can they stay unprotected until we have longer periods of freezing temps)? I figured the trees should stay out for much of the fall, if possible.
