In my annual tradition of searching and calling a few places to see if anyone local is stocking pumice, I stumbled across a landscape materials yard that has 3/8"-minus black lava fines: Colorado Materials, Inc. in Longmont, CO. It's $65 per cubic yard, but they also let you fill a 5-gallon bucket for $5. However, if you weigh-in and weigh-out your vehicle, they will let you drive up and sift it right at the pile and charge ridiculously low rates (by bonsai soil standards) based on weight. I just got over 300 lbs (about 40 gallons) for $12. Only downside is that there is almost no material in the 1/4-3/8" drainage layer range. I'd say half is 1/8-1/4", a quarter is 1/16-1/8", and the rest dust. Still no luck on local pumice and shipping rates are getting more extreme every year.

Earlier this year as growth hardened off on two ponderosa pines, I noticed that a few of this year's needles were yellowing, browning and falling out of their sheaths. I've gone back today to the locations and pressed on some of the buds and found out that while they looked nice, they were hollowed out. I opened up a few of them and found these. Any idea what they are and how to treat? September 17, 2020: August 18, 2020 on ponderosa 2: July 18, 2020 on ponderosa 1:

Being new to Bonsai, I was wondering if someone could clarify soil particle sizes for me. After watching some Bonsai Mirai and reading the soil primer on RMBS web site, it seems to be that there are typically two ranges used: 1/8”-1/4” and 1/16”-1/8” and that generally everything that falls through a 1/16” screen is fines that is thrown away and everything that stays above a 1/4” screen is generally also not used in most soil mixes. Am I understanding that right? If not, what is the upper limit of size when one talks about 1/4” particle size, as generally you sift for a range between two screens. It’s confusing (as a beginner) to talk about discrete sizes of particles like the RMBS soil primer does, since it seems more common to sift between screens and have a range of particle sizes. I got further confused when I opened the pumice that arrived via the club order and found that it is all extremely large and maybe only 10% of the bag falls through a 1/4” screen. Mostly seems unusable to me, unless I’m just way off base in my understanding of these particle sizes. The lava that arrived fell 95% between the 1/4” screen and 1/8” screen and is more along the lines of what I was expecting. Thanks!

Hi all, I have a ponderosa collected last fall that has huge needle growth this Spring. On two of the buds with new growth, I have noticed a few of the long, new needles have fallen off or are about to. Around the buds of these there is a weird enclosed pocket that I have shown in photos below. The final pic is when I poked into it today. Is this spider mites? I noticed a little webbing when I enlarged the photos, but I know I also have regular spiders living in the trees. The white coating on the needles is fungicide residue from its use earlier this season. Any thoughts on what this is or how I can control it so I don't lose further needles? Thanks! -Matt

Hi all! I am looking for an RMBS member that lives near Highlands, Sunnyside or Berkeley neighborhoods that would be interested in trading off watering / care responsibilities when the other is out of town. I mostly have automated sprinklers setup when I’m away, but would love to find someone who could check in every 3-4 days to make sure everything seems healthy. I would be happy to do the same for you! Please let me know if you’re interested!

Spring collecting season is upon us and it seems like all of the forest service offices are shut down and not issuing transplant permits. Too bad, because social isolation means a lot of extra time for me and it would be a great activity with no one else around! Does anyone have any resources they suggest or are willing to lend out? I’ve consumed a lot of what’s available online (blog/forum posts, Ryan Neil‘s videos/podcasts with Randy Knight and Backcountry Bonsai, Andy Smith and Larry Jackal's books, Nick Lenz' book that the club has in its library). One item I'd like to borrow is a CD/DVD that Andy Smith made many years ago (2006?), if anyone has it.

Hi all, I collected a small ponderosa pine in August 2019 and it has done well overall. I wintered it on a heat bed and there are roots appearing from the bottom of the container. However, very recently, in the last few weeks, I noticed some browning of the foliage on a lower section of the tree. The apex, and other parts of the lower section are still looking healthy. Does anyone have an idea of what this is, how I can fix it, or at least prevent it from spreading to other sections? Thank you!
