Hey there and thanks for the info in advance, I have been getting into the art of bonsai lately and have spent the last few weeks wiring small saplings of Douglas firs and Ponderosa pine trees in my yard. I know that the Ponderosas have the Rhizomes amongst the roots and there for you do not want to clean the roots to much when collecting, and that spring is a better time of year to collect. Is this the same for Douglas Firs? I have not been able to find quite as much info on them. Most of these trees that I have wired in my yard are under 1 foot tall and seem to be fairly young.

Hi, I'm sure you will succeed, I wish you good luck
I am interested in a collection trip/training session too. My in-laws have some property down in southern CO, with some interesting options to collect.
Doug firs have been difficult for me, but perhaps speaking with Todd at First Branch would be an option.(he has collected many) You can technically collect any month of the year, but for most folks you're going to have a lot more success in the Spring right before buds push when the tree is energy positive. (with almost all trees)
I would recommend networking at the next meeting or two and see if you can plan a Spring collecting trip with one of our experienced collectors.
Also if there are any experience Yamadori Collectors who want to help me when the time is right I have found a lot of good specimen up here in Evergreen and would love to be shown the ropes! I am pumped to be part of this group!
