My Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Double Take Scarlet Storm’ Bonsai tree is just now starting to bud out and bloom. It is currently on loan to the Denver Botanic Gardens and is being shown in Marnie’s Pavilion. The tree will be there while it is still flowering for the public to see. I have updated the the page with the new photos from the DBG. I will add more photos as the DBG sends them to. Enjoy the tree. Nicks Garden Center in Aurora has a lot of different quinces for sale including Toyo Nishiki which is a choice species for Bonsai. Click on the link above to see how this tree was developed. They are good trees for beginners. Photo credit to Larry Jackel.

Toyo Nishiki change colors on you when they bloom. Same tree as above, how cool is that?
I picked up a Toyo Nishiki at Nick's this week. Not many left and none flowering, while they are beside Texas Scarlett that are in bloom, so they may not go fast. There were only 6 when I was there and not really that great. Mostly multi stem sticks. But you can't beat the spring flowers.
Thanks for the tips! I moved it to a spot where it gets afternoon shade. It has a bunch more flower buds that haven't opened yet, we'll see what happens!
Hard to say what happened with it. Be prepared for hot weather with it and protect from sun when temps are starting to hit 90. Spider mites are also a problem. Nice trunk on it!
I moved it in the garage during that cold snap and for most nights when the temps were expected to drop in the low 30’s.
heading back to nicks today!
No they should not be scorched at all. Was it left outside when the overnight temps hit 15-17 degrees? That would do it maybe. Toyo Nishiki blooming at my house. You should go back and get one they normally are not sold in Colorado. Mine came from Home Depot in Castle Rock and it was the only one.
Nice tree Mike! I have a Texas Scarlet that is blooming now but the flowers seem to be getting scorched on the top. Are these best placed under some shade when flowering?
I saw the Toyo Nishiki's at Nicks the other day, i should have picked one up! I may have to go back and grab one. :)
