I tried it with some larch -- they may have been too large already as they had small lower branching, but I guess I'll find out. :) Also have an order in for some aspen seedlings, so I will try it with those when they arrive.
I recently saw this video too and I'm going to give it a try with some silver maple cuttings from a silver maple in my backyard once the cuttings are ready.
Anyone have experience with silver maples? I know they are very good at regenerating branches since we've cut the tree in our backyard to nothing but the trunk 3 times in the past 7 years and its come back strong every time. I see no reason why they would be very different from other maple species but sometimes trees can surprise you.
Edit: it has come to my attention that the leaf size will be quite large and will take significant effort to shrink if its even possible to get it to an appealing size at all. This being said I'm not worried about it since it will still look nice in the winter or when defoliated.
I decided to try this with some Tartarian maple seedlings I started. The seeds were collected in fall of 2018. I put them in a pot with garden soil and left them outside overwinter. They sprouted in the spring of 2019. For the winter of 2019/2020 I put them in a bunker.
There are 8 seedlings. Four of decent size and 4 much smaller. I bound them all as described in the video.
On 3/20/2020 I brought them indoors to let the root mass unfreeze and/or warm up. By 3/24/2020 the buds were swelling. I bound them into a clump starter. I root pruned cutting off the tap root and some of the single roots higher on the trunk.
I potted them in an equal mix of akadama, pumice, lava, and soil pep and placed them indoors on a heat mat under lights.
